A 33-year-old man from Texas has become the fifth person to die in the US after contracting the swine flu virus. & x8 g7 }% P8 {1 c. P

( O7 F0 v! g$ IThe man from Corpus Christi, who has not been named by the authorities, died earlier this month, health officials in Texas said. 6 q5 b% E2 x1 c/ f& R$ o
8 A9 y5 _& _3 S8 H8 t3 x6 k$ ^Dr William Burgin Jr, of the Corpus Christi-Nueces county health district, said that the man died on May 5 or May 6 after becoming ill a few days earlier. % `. E7 ^5 F8 G' F
! C- y- q, a1 U; N ~, kHe said that the man had pre-existing medical conditions, including heart problems, that made it more difficult for him to survive any viral illness. ! t6 x8 \, ^9 K( A

Dr Burgin did not identify the man but said he was a single parent with three children. One of the children had also contracted swine flu but was treated successfully and is making a recovery. / V8 A0 j% W5 P# @4 Q

Dr Burgin said that county health officials had received confirmation on Friday morning that the man had died of swine flu. * ?& k* g, V7 K8 L# N% I, B+ |$ M

The death is the fifth from swine flu in the US.

Meanwhile, British health officials confirmed seven new cases, bringing the total in the UK to 85.
