He was not alone. Nadine Palmer and Chris Herzberg came dressed as Zelda and Link from the popular Zelda video game franchise. Ms. Palmer said they felt an obligation to support an event that so fully embraced their interests. "We're basically video game wow gold nerds and costume nerds," she said with a laugh. "We were surprised to see something like this wow gold here. We felt like we had to support it." Mr. Herzberg said part of the appeal was experiencing something new while bonding with fellow fans of electronic quests and combat. "It's an interesting mish-mash," he said. "You aren't going to see a lot of these people at a Beethoven concert." The concert began, informally, with a costume contest, won after some fierce video game-style competition by an extremely young Mario carrying his clearly coveted plush mushroom. The concert properly opened with an homage to the origins of video game music, with orchestral arrangements of the perfectly timed beeps of Pong merging into tunes from later pioneers such as Tetris and Tempest. Highlights of the evening included an onstage Frogger competition with the orchestra playing yyqq0928 accompaniment, an appearance by World of Warcraft composer Russell Brower and a Guitar Hero segment. Mr. Smith, who came dressed as Louis from the recent zombie slaying epic Left 4 Dead (the blood was fake), said that in the end the evening fulfilled him in two very different ways. "What did it for me was the desire to do something new, something fancy," he said. "But it also lets me embrace the child, the part that loves video games."
