You have to recognize that all surgeries have complications. Angioplasty (血管支架) may cause bleeding, tearing or even rupture of the blood vessel through which the wire is passed. Because you are introducing a foreign object into the blood vessel, it is possible to cause a clot or break off fat deposits off blood vessel walls that may travel via the bloodstream and cause blockage elsewhere (such as a stroke). As with any surgery there is a risk of infection, and complications with hospital stay. When they look into the arteries they have to use a chemical dye so that it shows up on X-Ray, the dye may cause kidney failure. ; I' h2 u$ @, h# [9 A

There are 2 types of stents - metal stents and stents coated with a layer of medication. The medication acts to prevent the artery from becoming clogged again, but at the same time causes there to be an increased risk of clot formation. So if your dad needs a specialized stent with medication coating (drug-eluting stent) he will need to take the anticoagulation medication (plavix) for at least one year in combination with aspirin. If your dad only gets a metal stent he will need plavix for 1-3 months in combination with aspirin. Aspirin will have to be taken for the rest of his life. The problem with plavix is that it predisposes a person to bleeding (anything that prevents clotting will cause bleeding). It might make your dad's hypertension slightly worse, but this shouldn't be of concern. It wouldn't affect your dad's parkinson's disease, but if he has very poor mobility due to parkinson's and he has a fall hitting his head, he is at high risk for bleeding in his head. 3 f/ b& ?! Otherwise aspirin and plavix both cause gastrointestinal upset.( U# S, t, l9 k) a) q( U

In Canada we treat patients only if we are certain that there will be a long term benefit for the patient. Even with the many problems of angioplasty it will lower mortality rates compared to those who do not have the surgery. However, in China everything is fee for service so you have to make sure it is necessary and not the hospital just trying to squeeze more money out of you.

Finally if your dad has very advanced heart disease, the doctor may offer to do a bypass surgery instead of putting in stents. Best of luck!
