They are employed by quality control, maintenance and safety departments of manufacturing, processing, transportation, energy and other companies and by private industrial inspection establishments.

Non-destructive testers and inspectors perform some or all of the following duties:- G8 @# r6 X+ ~) T: ?/ n" C
Set up and calibrate non-destructive testing equipment }" o, E2 g/ Y, K1 Z
Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities (defects) using ultrasonic, radiographic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current and other non-destructive testing methods% A; [# y; ]' l2 W
Establish techniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations
; V' K- l4 H# g# q# G# q; oInterpret radiographs, cathode ray tube (CRT) or digital readouts, conductivity meters and visual indicators
* ^! {- n# g) C. c( D) e' T+ pApply testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards and evaluate results
# g, [# N7 @+ ~) B: i0 e8 u G. ]Organize and report test results
6 c }% ~8 P: A8 X `$ E: WMay perform specialized inspections using acoustic emission, vibration analysis, infrared thermography and laser shearography testing methods

7 j+ R ]' K5 [1 c9 E" T, r NCompletion of secondary school is required.
$ Z" Q1 R2 X9 C* ICompletion of two years of an approved post-secondary science or engineering program may be required.
9 [& e2 c% `; @: n6 \Additional classroom and on-the-job training is required for certification in non-destructive testing.% Y. `" {: }1 x2 Z
Non-destructive testing certification by Natural Resources Canada is available in three levels and is usually required by employers.
7 O+ {! V% {3 l9 `/ Y1 iIndustrial radiographers using a radioactive isotope must pass an examination to be recognized as a certified exposure device operator by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
2 F; i$ N+ U5 {+ A, s9 TWelding inspector certification by the Canadian Welding Bureau is available in three levels and may be required by employers.
6 J) ~) f2 C. kBoiler and pressure vessel, process pipeline and above-ground storage tank inspector certification is available from the American Petroleum Institute.
