Why wear a poppy

“Please wear a poppy”, the old lady said
$ V  t$ z8 r- Q$ c# t And held one forth, but I shook my head 0 m7 X" Q' B# D0 a+ Q1 ~# c
Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare
" {. p5 x! Z( T6 r2 rHer face was old, and lined with care, - G* V' u$ F3 b/ _, _7 M2 j- \  a
Yet beneath the scars, the years had made , Z7 a- F; ^+ ?* O* S4 o% [
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
: Y$ C- i$ ]3 K! q" y* m" |
- a8 {# @6 b& L+ U8 W* \A boy came whistling down the street 8 m, |7 ~( g* ~; c! d, [
Bounding along on his carefree feet ! g8 K5 r1 ]. ^( ?& O
His smile was full of joy and fun+ m" B( i+ P. g0 N) ?, Y% Z5 [# l  o& f
“Lady” he said, “can I have one?
. X8 t6 k* a& M5 i) OAs she pinned it on I heard him say
# y$ s& i4 {, f) W4 y“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
, c$ [/ \# e8 ]# hThe lady smiled in her wistful way & F3 k. P; W( d; I3 E) |/ t/ H5 [
And answered “this is remembrance day” ; ]5 }6 p# ~1 n* {. `8 V
$ Q4 m5 I4 y1 H( Y
“The poppy is the symbol for the, 5 x6 Z0 f& d% `. P/ y
The gallant men and women who died in the war”.
6 X/ ?, N: N$ |* O1 O “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see”
4 Y0 X% ]' G4 Y' m' O/ J& ?5 s$ z' k; t% E
“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes, # y# r9 q! H' Y
He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about”
2 o& c# `! u2 k( ^As the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”, " T* o; T5 Q$ p6 E" b( G
He was fine and strong with a boyish smile, # n. F2 c) ]! z
But he seemed to be with us a such a short while
! v" \) _2 i+ u1 I" a+ v/ @When the War broke out he went away
( p$ B2 M- c0 L0 f1 @I can still remember his face that day 8 Y* b# Q  l5 f, |  f! v( ^, |
When he smiled at me and said goodbye 2 {" u; S* n8 R" ?) ]$ v! ?' M( l
“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry” : p; |5 y$ t+ b

" n5 I9 p+ Q; W0 QBut the War went on and he had to stay 5 X% \3 z4 `% u
All I could do was wait and pray
' n, q; z9 w" W, a( j0 `5 VHis letters told of an awful fight & V( J6 U! Z4 N3 {  X4 E
I can see it still in my dreams at night
6 c' @0 |; N4 H0 p3 h  k5 q! sWith the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire
; Y% P; o+ A, Y" hAnd the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire ' H/ S5 q9 D& x( s  j# F8 V
Until at last the War was won
2 Y% B% [/ H: z$ i0 OAnd that is why we wear the poppy son # a6 N* f1 J3 H7 Q0 i& }/ _

  z! D  H2 a5 v7 R; _; A% @The small boy turned as if to go
0 z) }( C' L6 @Then stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know”
" j- U& s- U3 [' C- [' W' O- QThat sure did sound like an awful fight
( x% G& G. L+ B' Z “But your son, did he come home all right”?
9 p8 t: Q: Y1 p! S# b; [7 LA tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
: I+ e9 a% _! s! d6 TBut didn’t speak.
& m& o8 G5 L) Z, n* k) R, w% T6 Q; p8 M/ Y
I slunk away, head bowed in shame, 6 s9 r0 v- W4 a" F
And if you were me, you’d have done the same, , p9 `" U! Y- Q7 T/ L! V. j) F
For our thanks in giving is often delayed # }% J# N. D, T) ~' T
Though our freedom was bought by the legions who paid. + o" h( c: n/ _. k6 N

5 ]9 q6 J0 {  w% `% M+ n5 A/ ]  |. nAnd so, when you see a poppy worn
  Z. \# `$ \) f4 f, n+ pLet us reflect on the burden borne
: {; d4 n/ B2 M& Y- y9 x6 gBy those who gave their precious all # J1 M% F. k3 E7 Y9 r. w
When asked to answer their countries call
* S& }; ?% |' H2 Z1 C* ^) zThat we at home, in peace may live 1 V2 z& L4 Q2 t) q, \3 P( w* F
Then wear a poppy, remember, and give.
