A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed , v" ]) R/ |; `0 t) t
each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably coifed and 4 O4 h& j- `; | n- k5 K- i
shaved perfectly applied, even though he is legally blind, moved to a ( ?1 }2 G! J( p8 O5 R0 u) ~
nursing home today.
) U1 g5 t0 j0 U* ~ [3 ~' b- X/ \. ~- k9 H
His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. : z5 D0 ]! w+ p$ ~+ ]
After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home,
/ M! O6 u7 {4 b; J! Ahe smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. , j, e" _' r: Q9 F
1 g' T+ `0 W2 E% p! u/ zAs he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual ! p2 B U/ T9 q, a: f
description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been - U H0 M0 g" @: N7 M" I4 G) _! P5 J
hung on his window.
/ G H# \. z {( N% V5 I
3 ^ m- }- W7 h& n6 W% i Y"I love it," he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having ) J; b& A- E2 m; t; n& D' p( ~0 `
just been presented with a new puppy.
+ r* ~ M* L- L$ t# {0 V* g5 _- ]5 i; p
"Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait."
" G# x( f7 s$ ?' M+ N* u4 z0 p7 N2 C9 R" C- E
"That doesn't have anything to do with it," he replied.

"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my
{2 V- W8 ?7 B$ r8 V7 r+ n# Yroom or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ... it's how
9 I8 F7 g- D( kI arrange my mind. I already decided to love it."

, Z3 F/ F; I) h/ K+ j& K/ ZIt's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. 9 z" c0 j" _9 V' \, H7 }

I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I ; z3 l! y) O6 v
have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed 0 T. H0 Z( k( X) u
and be thankful for the ones that do. 2 z0 i+ r, r8 ` n
% E; Q. U8 Z6 o% \0 q4 A7 A2 n
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I'll focus on the new 9 J6 r; h% r) K+ _) x
day and all the happy memories I've stored away. & O# Y# ]; `- ^! @' _: ^
- W- H, W$ H+ h+ v8 A: A" yJust for this time in my life. . ^# d" Z& |$ w

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in.
" d! a# a4 a3 `! y3 X) ?* i4 O1 G* A7 a
So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank , R# k+ I1 W9 W+ j6 r: r
account of memories! Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank.
