Non-destructive testers and inspectors perform some or all of the following duties:- ~) v1 D% k0 l S2 B/ Q) X! {
Set up and calibrate non-destructive testing equipment& K4 j. i x) R. y _& v
Conduct tests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities (defects) using ultrasonic, radiographic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current and other non-destructive testing methods
4 p R+ Y) }% j1 p+ eEstablish techniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strict adherence to safety regulations
6 V3 r: }8 i1 B2 e, U9 H) W+ ]Interpret radiographs, cathode ray tube (CRT) or digital readouts, conductivity meters and visual indicators8 O9 ^% j9 b7 \7 h/ g, N
Apply testing criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards and evaluate results

May perform specialized inspections using acoustic emission, vibration analysis, infrared thermography and laser shearography testing methods6 A6 _. X) h! P

Employment requirements

Completion of secondary school is required.7 k9 Q7 b0 ~+ z! z& p; b V0 P7 I4 E
Completion of two years of an approved post-secondary science or engineering program may be required.
6 H5 a h8 d5 \' i! t5 pAdditional classroom and on-the-job training is required for certification in non-destructive testing.. @. v) l+ E$ g3 [. x
Non-destructive testing certification by Natural Resources Canada is available in three levels and is usually required by employers.% k8 O+ F5 |, U3 l) b
Industrial radiographers using a radioactive isotope must pass an examination to be recognized as a certified exposure device operator by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
( R; z( w# L: e/ M$ L# hWelding inspector certification by the Canadian Welding Bureau is available in three levels and may be required by employers.
: A+ {/ C3 E/ OBoiler and pressure vessel, process pipeline and above-ground storage tank inspector certification is available from the American Petroleum Institute.
